Swamp Cooler or Refrigerated Air? A Colorado Springs Decision

Evaporative cooling genuinely works in our dry climate. Here is where it wins, where it does not, and what conversion actually involves.

In most of the country this is not a real question. In Colorado Springs it is, because our summers are dry enough that evaporative cooling actually performs.

Plenty of older homes here — particularly on the south and west sides — still have a swamp cooler on the roof, and their owners are weighing whether to repair it or convert.

How each one works

An evaporative cooler pulls outside air through wet pads. Water evaporates, the air cools, and a blower pushes it into the house. It adds moisture, and it needs windows cracked so air can escape — it works by moving a continuous stream of cooled outside air through the building.

Refrigerated air is a closed loop. It cools and dehumidifies the same indoor air repeatedly, with the heat rejected outside through a condenser. Windows stay shut.

Where evaporative cooling wins

Operating cost. A swamp cooler runs a blower and a small pump. Air conditioning runs a compressor. The difference in electricity use is substantial.

Dry climate performance. Evaporative cooling gets less effective as humidity rises, and our humidity is usually low. On a typical dry June afternoon here, it works well.

Fresh air. Constant outside air exchange, which some people much prefer.

Lower installation cost, particularly where one already exists.

Where it struggles

Monsoon season. Late summer brings humid stretches, and that is exactly when evaporative cooling underperforms — hot and sticky is the one condition it cannot handle. This is the complaint that drives most conversions.

Added humidity indoors, which matters for anyone sensitive to it.

Windows open. That means dust, pollen, noise and a security consideration.

Maintenance. Pads, pump, water lines, and a seasonal startup and shutdown. Roof-mounted units mean a roof penetration and someone going up there twice a year. Mineral scale from our hard water is a recurring nuisance.

Winter. It must be covered and drained, or it becomes a hole in your roof letting cold in.

Converting: what is actually involved

This is where expectations and reality tend to part company. Adding refrigerated air to a home that has only ever had evaporative cooling is not simply setting a condenser outside.

  • Ductwork. Evaporative systems move a large volume of air at low pressure, and their ducts are often sized differently than a refrigerated system needs. Sometimes it is workable, sometimes it needs modification.
  • Electrical. A condenser needs a dedicated circuit and appropriate service capacity. Older panels frequently need upgrading.
  • Furnace compatibility. A refrigerated system uses an evaporator coil in the furnace plenum and the furnace blower. Older furnaces are not always suited to it, which can turn a cooling project into a full system replacement.
  • Roof repair. Removing a roof-mounted cooler means patching the opening properly.
  • Load calculation. Insist on one. Sizing by square footage produces oversized equipment that short-cycles.

None of this makes conversion a bad idea. It makes it a project worth scoping honestly rather than being surprised by.

A reasonable way to decide

Keep the swamp cooler if it is in good condition, your bills matter more to you than late-summer humidity, and you do not mind the seasonal maintenance.

Convert if the unit is failing anyway, monsoon humidity genuinely bothers you, you have allergies that make open windows unpleasant, or you are already replacing the furnace — because doing both at once is far cheaper than doing them separately.

A third option worth knowing about: ductless mini-splits. They avoid the ductwork question entirely, cool room by room, and provide heat as well. In older homes with awkward duct layouts they are frequently the most sensible answer, and homeowners here often do not know they exist.

Before you commit

Get at least two opinions, and ask each to explain what they would do about ductwork and electrical specifically. The bid that ignores both is the one that produces surprises.
